Mario Casas stars in the Spanish miniseries in the form of a thriller with one of the most impactful endings. The cast is completed by José Coronado, Susi Sánchez, and Alexandra Jiménez.
Some of the best Spanish series in history are available in Netflix’s catalog. Besides recent hits like ‘El caso Asunta,’ ‘Clanes,’ and ‘Respira,’ the platform also hides in its drawer one of the best Spanish series on Netflix that you must watch, created and directed by Oriol Paulo (‘Contratiempo‘). It was in April 2019 when the big N announced the adaptation of Harlan Coben’s novel, ‘The Innocent,‘ with a production team led by Belén Atienza, who has supported J.A. Bayona from his beginnings with ‘The Orphanage’ (2007) to ‘Society of the Snow’ (2023) and other projects like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ (Guillermo del Toro, 2006). The premiere of ‘The Innocent,’ announced even on the screens of Times Square in New York, arrived to satisfy the expectations of an audience intrigued by its mysterious synopsis.
In just 8 episodes, with a script written by Oriol Paulo himself along with Jordi Vallejo (‘No matarás’) and Guillem Clua (‘Smiley‘), ‘The Innocent‘ tells the story of an ex-convict who tries to rebuild his life, trusts almost no one, and tries to uncover the truth that surrounds him. According to the plot, one night nine years ago, Mateo was involved in a fight and accidentally ended up becoming a killer. Now, nine years later, he tries to start fresh with Olivia, his wife. An inexplicable call from Olivia’s mobile while she is traveling baffles Mateo, who begins a frantic race to discover the truth. His innocence will be questioned again, this time by Lorena, a police inspector investigating a suicide case.
One of the best aspects of ‘The Innocent‘ is that it treats each episode like a movie, focusing on a different character each time and revealing almost all their secrets, like adding another piece to the puzzle that is fully unveiled in episode 8. The addictive Netflix thriller starring Mario Casas features the actor from ‘Three Steps Above Heaven‘ (Fernando González Molina, 2010) along with Aura Garrido (‘The Body’), Alexandra Jiménez (‘Witching and Bitching‘), Juana Acosta (‘Perfect Strangers’), José Coronado (‘Close Your Eyes‘), Miki Esparbé (‘Off Course‘), and Susi Sánchez (‘Lullaby‘). In each episode, the introduction of a character means uncovering another piece of an apparently unsolvable puzzle. ‘The Innocent’ masterfully plays with a labyrinthine plot that hides a jigsaw of crime, deceit, and mysteries.
The ending of the Netflix series not only left us speechless but also opened the door to a question: Will there be a season 2? “Intrigue is my passion,” Oriol Paulo says in an interview with us about ‘The Innocent.’
“Ever since I watched Hitchcock films because my grandmother loved Cary Grant and James Stewart, or since I devoured the entire collection of Agatha Christie’s white paperbacks, which I still have, during summers at the beach. Although, like a character in a Patrick Suskind story, you shouldn’t obsess too much over references…”
