Neither ‘Emily In Paris’ Nor ‘The Umbrella Academy’: It Has Just Arrived On Netflix And Is Already The Most Watched Series

Inspired by real events, the fiction has placed itself at the top of the platform, surpassing previously unbeatable titles.

One thing that has revolutionized Netflix is the way we consume audiovisual content by releasing entire series all at once, making all the episodes available to the audience from day one. This model, known in the Anglo-Saxon world as binge-watching, allows viewers to fully immerse themselves in a story without having to wait weeks to see the next episode. This strategy has generated a great reception from the public, who easily become hooked and can binge-watch entire seasons in a short time, becoming addicted to the latest hit series. Other platforms like Prime Video, Disney+, and Max (HBO) try to extend the hype by spreading their episodes over several weeks, in a traditional television manner, keeping the series in the conversation for a couple of months.

Specifically, there is a Netflix series that has managed to secure the top position in the catalog following its recent release. And we’re not talking about global hits like My Plush Reindeer, Bridgerton, or the underrated Ripley. We are referring to a series of intrigue and drama that is partly inspired by true events. Less than a week after Accidente joined Netflix’s catalog, it has already become the most-watched series on the platform in Spain, surpassing recent additions and premieres like The Umbrella Academy, Emily in Paris, or Murder for Beginners. The Mexican production, created by Leonardo Padrón, features actors such as Ana Claudia Talancón (The Crime of Father Amaro), Sebastián Martínez (Pálpito), Eréndira Ibarra (The Matrix Resurrections), and Alberto Guerra (Griselda).

Over the course of 10 episodes, the series narrates a tragedy that shakes several families during what should have been a happy celebration. The consequences of a tragic accident at a birthday party radically change the course of their destinies, destroying friendships and hearts alike. According to statements from Leonardo Padrón reported by El Estímulo, the series is not based on a single real-life story, but draws its inspiration from a combination of similar situations that have occurred in different parts of the world. Thus, the central idea of the accident comes from various cases that, although shocking, are unfortunately more common than one might think. This is precisely what Caye Casas exemplifies in La Mesita del Comedor, the Spanish black comedy film that amazed Stephen King.

Chills accumulate in the production directed by Gracia Querejeta and Klych López, which has divided critics with both positive and negative comments. However, there is no doubt about the good results in terms of viewership, as it ranks number 1 among the most-watched series on the platform in Spain. It is still unknown whether Netflix, aware of the strong viewership numbers, will greenlight a new season. Until then, we can enjoy ten episodes full of unexpected twists and continuous tensions among the protagonists: three shattered families that will never be the same again.
