A dramatic comedy full of twists and surprises.
This time, we’re not going to play Indiana Jones and dig up forgotten or unfairly criticized films to ask you to give them a new—or second—chance, as we did with Netflix’s eerie thriller with “claustrophobic and disturbing atmospheres,” one of the most underrated in recent years.
And we’re not doing it because, over the past week, a wonderful phenomenon has unfolded on the red platform. After a successful theater run and being hailed as one of the best films of 2024, it’s now taking Netflix by storm.
After topping the Top 10 most-watched movies, House on Fire currently ranks second on Netflix, surpassed only by Werewolves, starring Jean Reno and Suzanne Clément. This marks a triple success, as two other Spanish films—Under Therapy and Father There Is Only One 4, one of Spain’s top-grossing films of 2024—also rank among the top ten most popular movies.
Released in theaters on June 28, House on Fire also set a remarkable record, becoming the highest-grossing Catalan film in cinema history. Directed by Dani de la Orden and starring Emma Vilarasau, Alberto San Juan, Clara Segura, Enric Auquer, and Macarena García, it has now surpassed Black Bread and Alcarràs.
Although the film initially appears to center on selling an inherited summer house in Cadaqués and spending a few days with family during which tensions arise, Dani de la Orden shared with us that House on Fire is “a dark comedy about a family that has forgotten how to remain one.” The director of The Best Summer of My Life adds, “It’s a film about the ‘darker’ side of families, all that is left unsaid, and the less tender, more selfish part that everyone has with those we love most. All approached naturally, but with humor.”
So, if you missed it in theaters, now is your chance to watch it.
