On Sunday, Netflix released the first teaser for Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film The Guilty, in which he plays a disturbed police investigator who’s been demoted to a 911 operator who must save a frightened caller amid a terrifying day of disclosures — and reckonings. Since its festival premiere in 2018, Gyllenhaal has been a major fan of Möller’s film, which became Denmark’s Oscar nomination for Best International Feature.
The Guilty, a white-knuckle thriller from director Antoine Fuqua, screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto, and star Jake Gyllenhaal, is an English-language adaptation of Gustav Möller’s successful Danish thriller from 2018.
The Plot of ‘The Guilty’, Cast, and Other Details
For those who are not familiar with the film, here’s the plot:
“The Guilty, like the original Danish language film, takes place in a cramped 911 dispatch contact center over the course of a single morning. Joe Baylor, the call operator, is waiting for us there. He doesn’t typically work in this field, and the incessant ringing phones are wearing him down, especially because so many of the folks on the other end don’t seem to understand what constitutes a true “emergency.” When he answers the phone to a young woman, he’s hardly paying attention. She seemed to be afraid. And it becomes clear as he speaks with her that she is in great danger. From beginning to end, ‘The Guilty’ seems to be a spectacular experience. Joe begins breaking every guideline in the call operator’s handbook in a frantic attempt to save her life. As the hours pass, he realizes that nothing is as it seems, and that the only way out is to face the reality.“
The taut and gritty story of an alarm dispatcher’s desperate attempt to locate an abducted woman had several of us grasping our recliners for dear life, almost forgetting to breathe as the action unfolded in front of us.
Riley Keough, Ethan Hawke, Bill Burr, Christina Vidal, Gillian Zinser, Peter Sarsgaard, Becky Wu, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and many others star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal as unstable operator Joe Baylor in this thriller. However, because we never leave the 911 dispatch call center, some famous faces will never appear on the screen. You’ll have to pay special attention to their voices on the other end of the line.
The Guilty will be available to stream on Netflix starting October 1st, so we’ll be getting the spookiest month of the year off to a good start.
